Only the Lord God knew what this past week would bring for Scotts Mills. As the wildfires raged in the windstorm, sweeping up over the mountains from the Santiam River canyons Scotts Mills got the order to evacuate. Leave Immediately.
What a week it’s been as most of the residents sheltered in safer areas with brave, hardworking, determined people jumping in to fight the fires the best of their abilities, whether it was donating food, water or supplies to the front line workers, or taking their bull dozers to fight fire outbreaks, and maintaining communications for all the residents to get the best news and information.
Many of the residents hadn’t known each other but they pulled together as a unified front again the fires. It was a wonderful example of how God’s people should be working together. Tirelessly, each contributing as they’re able.
With the extremely dangerous air quality from smoke lungs quickly begin burning, eyes watering. The Level 3 Evacuation Order is still in place and there is still no power in Scotts Mills. Holding services in the church would not have been responsible.
But God knows our needs and the condition of our hearts and minds. We’re told in Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing but in everything, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ.”
God is with us no matter the circumstances but it’s our responsibility to make our requests known to Him – even though He does know them. There’s a line in the grand old hymn, It is Well, “What ever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, ‘It is well, it is well, with my soul.” Jesus teaches us to claim His wellness and His peace. It’s up to us to take our thoughts captive and to give all anxiety and fears to God. He is our Hope, and our Confidence. No matter what the day may bring we know that God is able to guard our hearts and minds, because of Jesus!
